Elena Fernández Álvaro

Elena Fernández Alvaro | External Opportunities Lead

Since 2013, Elena leads the scientific identification and implementation of Open Lab proposals in the field of malaria and shigellosis. Elena joined GSK in 2010 to work in antimalarial preclinical drug development, and coordinated the collaborative in vivo evaluation platform between Medicines for Malaria Venture and GSK (the Translational Pharmacology Group) before joining the Open Lab team. She is involved in several target-based and hypnozoite-focused malaria drug discovery projects.

Elena has a Pharmacy degree from Complutense University (Madrid, Spain) and a PhD in Biotechnology from Greifswald University (Greifswald, Germany). She worked in Akzo Nobel BV (Arnhem, The Netherlands) in the green chemistry field before joining GSK. Key career motivations are sustainable innovation and collaborative research to accelerate drug discovery and development.
