Lluis Ballell | Open Lab Head and Director External Opportunities Diseases of the Developing World
Lluis Ballell is Director of External Opportunities for the Tres Cantos Medicines Development Campus at GSK. Lluís joined GSK in 2005 as Principal Scientist to lead various collaborative drug discovery projects in Tuberculosis. During his career at GSK he has been involved in a number of international collaborative initiatives within the EU FP7 programme, NIH, Wellcome Trust, Gates Foundation, Medical Research Council, from submission to implementation, in addition to making a key contribution to the inception, funding, and development of the Open Lab concept.
As a scientist he has been actively involved in various preclinical and clinical TB drug discovery projects such as InhA, Mycobacterial Gyrase, new anti-tubercular whole cell inhibitors and the progression of a new betalactam antibiotic against TB into PoC in humans.
Before joining GSK, Lluis obtained a degree in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering from the Instituto Quimico de Sarrià (IQS, URL, Barcelona) and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Saint Andrews and University of East Anglia. He also held a post-doctoral Marie Curie Individual Fellowship in the Pharmaceutical Sciences department of Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Presently, as Director External Opportunities he is accountable for leading the development and implementation of DDW's external collaboration strategy.
